When can i get a restraining order against someone?
You can ask for a restraining order when your situation fits one of the types of order a court offers. Which type fits depends on your relationship with the person. In California, a domestic violence order is for people who are or were in a relationship, or are closely related. A civil harassment order is for people who are not, such as neighbors or coworkers. Another type covers a person who is 65 or older, or a dependent adult. Most orders can tell someone not to contact you or to stay away from you. This describes California only, so check your own area's rules.
When a lawyer helpsIf you are unsure which type of order fits, a court self-help center or a lawyer can help you pick the right one before you file.
