What happens if you get a possession charge?

If you are charged with a crime such as possession, you get a 'charge sheet' that sets out the details of the charge. The police then decide whether to release you until your court hearing or keep you in custody until then. If you are released, you might have to follow rules called 'bail'. Your first hearing will be at a magistrates' court. For a minor offence, your case might be decided without going to court. If you get a notice for this, you must respond within 21 days. These rules are for England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules. The source does not say what penalties a possession charge can bring.

When a lawyer helpsA lawyer is worth contacting as soon as you are charged, because they can explain your options before your first court hearing.
