How do i apply child support?
In the U.S., the main way to apply is to contact your state or tribal child support agency. They can help you get a child support order, no matter where the other parent lives. These agencies can find the other parent, establish parentage (legal fatherhood or motherhood), and enforce or change an order. In California, either parent or a legal guardian can enroll by asking, and there is an online form. You can also ask a court for an order by filing papers in a new or existing family law case. Rules vary by state. Note that the government does not pay child support itself. It only helps you collect it from the other parent.
When a lawyer helpsA private lawyer can be worth hiring if the case is complicated or the other parent disputes parentage, because child support agency lawyers do not represent either parent.
